Training Your Pet - Bird

Birds can make brilliant pets and can be just as good for company as a dog or a cat, but it is still important to train your pet, even if it is a bird. Birds need training just like any other animal so that you can handle your pet properly without causing distress to you and to your bird.

Training your pet is an important development in your relationship so that you will have respect for your pet and your pet will have respect for you, but how do you start on training your pet bird?

You can begin with petting. Birds are not the same as dogs and cats and have varying degrees on what kind of contact that they like. Getting your bird to let you pet you is not so much training as it is being able to tune into their behavior and working with the bird’s personality. Some birds love to be cuddled and petted, whilst others need to warm up to the idea of contact and other birds might never want to be petted remember, you should never force your pet to do something that they do not want to do because this will not only make you miserable, but it will upset your pet as well.

The first thing you should do when training your pet bird is to understand the bird’s unique personality. Birds tent to vary in how they like human contact some like physical contact whilst others like their own personal space. If you own a bird that doesn’t like being petted, then you will need to approach your pet slowly to make sure that your bird is comfortable. It might be that you will end up having to accept that your bird is not the cuddling type and persisting in trying to get close to a pet that doesn’t enjoy contact is just going to break the trust that it has with you.

When training your pet, you should also get to know your bird’s body language in order to learn the clues that your bird is giving to you. Reaching towards your bird’s head can be seen as a threat by the bird, especially if you are trying to reach to the back of his head. If your bird assumes a stiff posture or he runs away when you try to pet him, then this is a sure sign that the bird is uncomfortable with what you are doing and so you should respect your bird and try another day.
